peckham cantine

i constructed this model for a certain project during my foundation course; the peckham project. the ideal outcome of this project was to create a space, object or product that would benefit the neighborhood of peckham.

since peckham is saturated with certain northern african, caribbean and asian cultures, the neighborhood is filled with stands that sell cuisine and produce native to the latter communities; the most well known of these open markets is on peckham rye lane.

i deeply appreciate this about peckham, but I found myself asking, where to sit and eat? i let this question drive my project of creating an eating area, or cantine, throughout my process with research, construction, design, as well as exploring the use of colour.

Basquiat +art deco

basquiat's works reminded me of the graffiti all around peckham- and how artistically beautiful it is.

peckham rye southwestern Railway station was constructed in art deco design in 1935- a time when peckham thrived. however, london's weather has given the white entrance a dirty appearance. I wanted to incorporate these stylistic choices into my model to remind the community of peckham's significance in the 1930s.
